Boys bedrooms are definitely not a space to take too seriously. Its a room to decorate with fun and flexible design, without spending too much or worrying what will be damaged the next time their friends are over to play. We have five simple steps to help you! Firstly choose a colour scheme starting with a base colour that can be added to over time without having to redecorate – you might find pale blue is lovely when they are small, but doesn’t grow with them as easily as navy for example. Once you have this colour, look at what adds to it well – for example navy and red or navy and yellow, or both. Grey will compliment with yellow again, blues or for a neutral palate, simply add white. Their toys will add more colour than you could wish for so you don’t need to choose more than a couple to start with.

Pattern in any form always looks good here. Graphic zigzags, stripes or various illustrations will stand out and the walls are great place to start. Simply tape a shape onto the walls and paint beneath or above in a contrast colour. Chalkboard paint is a wonderful way to let children add their own decoration – either paint an entire wall or create a scene using only the bottom section, remember to keep a balance with the other wall colour as chalkboard sections will be dark and heavy in a room. Wall stickers are an instant decoration and can be removed once they grown out of them or bored with them.

Storage is key to any child’s room but you don’t need cupboards to fit this all in – open shelves, boxes of any and all sizes, and an array of hooks for anything from coats to dress up costumes. This is where children’s toys can cross over from fun to functional – they make for great wall decorations that can be taken apart and changed over from time to time. Lego makes this so easy from figurines to space stations. Books on picture shelves or piled high are instant colour to any room. Don’t forget to scale the furniture to their size – small stools and low desks, storage shelves under the bed rather than high on the wall or even hooks they can reach rather than needing your assistance will make their space as friendly as possible.
